Pre-requisite for K9 participation:

Level 2 Beginner HRD/Scent Detector Class
**Some exceptions may be considered on case by case basis.

Equipment Required:


  1. 25 ft+ long line (no flexi-leads)

  2. Non-slip collar or harness

  3. moist treats (cooked chicken, cheese, lunch meat, hot dogs, Bil Jac, etc)

  4. favorite toy(s)


Course Agenda
  1. Area search/grid strategy

  2. Line-ups for alert drills

  3. Beginning Shoreline/water work

  4. 3 blind scenarios (1/2-1 acre each): 0-2 scent sources plus distractions in each area hidden at the surface, elevated, or buried.

  5. 5 acre blind scenario with 40 lbs of target source and distractions.


What to Expect by end of Course:

  1. Handler understands how to determine an efficient search strategy for an assigned search area.

  2. K9 has started to recognize possibility of target scent to be under water (working from shoreline only).

  3. K9 is able to discriminate for specific target scent with distractors present in the area.

  4. Handler/K9 able to locate target scents in "blind" scenarios.

  5. Handler is able to “clear” assigned search area and determine how many (if any) target scents are present.

  6. K9 is exposed to large quantity of target source in a blind search scenario.

It’s true, dogs can smell through water too.  Cadaver dogs are a helpful tool to aid divers and searchers in the detection and recovery of a drowning victim by smelling the scent coming up to the surface of the water.  Dogs may work by boat or along the shoreline where possible.
